The Shima Enaga, a subspecies of the Long-tailed Tit, are known for their distinct white pattern, adorable features, and friendly nature. The Shima Enaga is native to the forests of Hokkaido in northern Japan, and are uniquely adapted to the cold environment by growing thicker and whiter feathers during the wintertime. Aptly nicknamed "Snow Fairy", the Shima Enaga symbolize purity and beauty. I'm dreaming of the day I get to witness these beauties in person. Until then, I'll just settle for my Shima Enaga tee and stare at my chest in the mirror.
On the back, there is a Yukimi doro ("snow-viewing lantern"). Stone lanterns first appeared in Japan for use in religious rituals, but their use has changed with the shifts in society and traditions over time. These specific lanterns come from the middle era of development, where they were actually used to light walkways, gardens, and waterfronts. Their wide brim (Kasa) helps to collect snow and shield the light from it. We recreated this effect by using a combination of screenprint and puff ink.
